Love's Message a Turn-off for Some

Commentary by Bob Gambacurta, Montgomery Independent

My daddy long ago warned me to beware of the man who boasts about his own honesty... If religion was the criterion for election, Congress would be full of pastors, priests, rabbis and preachers.  Those of us who prefer to keep politics out of religion, and religion out of politics found his [Love's] message to be obnoxious and heretical.

A Better Choice for Congress

THE SOUTHERN STAR (Ozark, AL)
Wednesday, JULY 16, 2008 ---

Editorial

With the arrival of the runoff election to determine the Republican nominee for the 2nd District Seat in Congress, we are thankful for one thing – the yammering, redundant, silly, television advertising paid for by Jay Love and Harri Anne Smith has come to an end.

Several hundred thousand dollars were spent by the two, each accusing the other of the same thing – raising taxes.

Then there was a knee jerk endorsement by Ozark Mayor Bob Bunting and others for Harri Anne Smith, a reaction to Prattville Mayor Jim Byard saying that a candidate from the northern section of the district would be better when it came to understanding the importance of protecting Maxwell Air Force Base if another round of BRAC came about.

The endorsement of Smith was aimed at assuring voters she knew where Fort Rucker was and would be better to protect Fort Rucker’s interest in Congress.

Regardless of who wins the Republican nomination, we are more convinced than ever that Bobby Bright is a better candidate to represent this district in Congress.

Some are disturbed over his entrance into the race as a Democrat.
With the situation that exists in this country today, we need less partisan politics, and more capable, strong willed representation at all levels of government.

In this case Bobby Bright is a heavy weight on qualifications, ability to represent the entire district and would not stoop to the kind of petty campaigning recently displayed by Love and Smith.

Bobby Bright, a native of Dale County, knows the interests and needs of the southern section of the district, and the northern section.  He has capably served the major city in the district, Montgomery, as mayor, now is his third term.  He knows the importance of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base and Fort Rucker.

Bright Should Wins Hands-down in November

Voter apathy won the election Tuesday. It won because so few people turned out at the polls. We're writing this before the results are known, but we anticipate less than 10 percent of the state's voters turned out. Since we are guessing, we will predict less than 5 percent voted.

Bright Praises Supreme Court Gun Decision

Alabama's Democratic Candidate for Congressional District 2, Mayor Bobby Bright, praised today's U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down part of a Washington, D.C.-ban on guns.

"The Second Amendment guarantees our right to bear arms and today, in a decision that was crucially important to the people of Alabama and all Americans, the Supreme Court affirmed that right," Bright said in a press release. "I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and in Congress I will make sure the rights of gun owners everywhere are protected."

In a 5-to-4 decision the Supreme Court determined that the Second Amendment protects and individual's right to maintain a gun, not just states rights' to maintain militias.

On the Road to Congress

Bright is a social conservative who believes he can find more resources for District 2.   But Bright isn't your usual Democrat, and his message often sounds as if it could be coming from a Republican.  A self-described social conservative, Bright says he is pro-life, pro-gun and "strong on military."

Top-Tier Recruit Rates a Rare Dem Challenge
for Open Alabama Seat

CQ.com, March 26, 2008
By Annie Johnson, CQ Staff

It has been a very long time since the Democrats have staged a seriously competitive bid to win Alabama’s conservative-leaning2nd Congressional District. But that has changed this year, the result of seven-term Republican Rep. Terry Everett ’s surprise decision to retire after eight terms and the emergence of Bobby Bright — mayor of the state capital of Montgomery, the 2nd District’s major population center — as the likely Democratic nominee.

These circumstances have prompted CQ Politics to change its rating on the race to Leans Republican, denoting a highly competitive contest, from Safe Republican, a non-competitive category to which the race had been previously assigned.
